If you run a fountain beverage program — whether it's a convenience store, restaurant, or gas station — your CO2 tank is the heartbeat of the whole operation. Without it, nothing pours. But most operators don't think about CO2 until the drinks go flat and customers start complaining.
Here's what you need to know about CO2 replacement timing, warning signs, and how to make sure you never run dry.
How Long Does a CO2 Tank Last?
It depends on two things: the size of your tank and how much volume you're pushing through your fountain machine.
A 20-pound CO2 tank typically lasts 2 to 4 months for a low-to-moderate volume location — think a small restaurant doing 50-100 fountain drinks per day. A 50-pound tank can last 4 to 8 months under the same conditions.
High-volume locations like busy gas stations or convenience stores with heavy fountain traffic will burn through CO2 faster. If you're doing 200+ drinks a day, you might go through a 20lb tank in 6 weeks or less.
Warning Signs Your CO2 Is Running Low
Don't wait for flat soda to tell you there's a problem. Watch for these early signs:
- Drinks taste flat or "off" — This is the most obvious sign. If customers mention the Coke tastes funny, check your CO2 first.
- Slow pour or weak stream — Low CO2 pressure means less force pushing syrup and water through the system.
- Frost on the tank — A thin layer of frost on the outside of the tank can indicate the gas is almost gone and the remaining liquid CO2 is expanding rapidly.
- Gauge reads below 500 PSI — If your regulator has a tank pressure gauge, anything below 500 PSI means you're in the danger zone.
Refill vs. Exchange: What's the Difference?
With a refill, you bring your tank somewhere to get it filled on the spot. This can take time and you're without CO2 while you wait.
With an exchange, a supplier drops off a full tank and picks up your empty. No waiting, no downtime. This is how most professional operations handle it — and it's what we do at Quality Beverage.
How to Save Money on CO2
CO2 pricing varies wildly depending on who you're buying from. Welding supply shops, industrial gas companies, and beverage distributors all charge different rates — and the spread can be significant.
At Quality Beverage, we carry the cheapest CO2 tanks in the Central Valley — both 20lb and 50lb sizes. We deliver across the entire region from Madera to Porterville, and we'll swap your empty tanks on the same visit we drop off syrup and supplies.
That's the real advantage of working with a single beverage distributor for everything: one truck, one delivery, one invoice. You save on CO2, you save on time, and you never have to coordinate multiple vendors.
Bottom Line
Check your CO2 levels at least once a week. Keep a backup tank. And if you're paying too much for gas — or dealing with unreliable deliveries — it might be time to switch suppliers. We've been delivering CO2 across the Central Valley for over 30 years, and we'll beat any price in Fresno. Period.
