Choosing the right CO2 tank size is one of those decisions that seems small but directly impacts your operating costs and how often you're dealing with tank swaps. Most fountain beverage setups use either a 20-pound or 50-pound tank — and each has its place.
Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you pick the right one for your business.
The Basics: Capacity and Lifespan
A 20lb CO2 tank holds 20 pounds of liquid carbon dioxide. That translates to roughly 160-200 gallons of carbonated beverage — enough for around 1,500 to 2,000 fountain drinks (at 8-12 oz each).
A 50lb CO2 tank holds 2.5 times as much gas, giving you 400-500 gallons of carbonated beverage — or roughly 3,800 to 5,000 drinks before it runs dry.
When a 20lb Tank Makes Sense
The 20lb tank is the go-to for smaller operations. It's the right choice if:
- You're a small restaurant with moderate fountain drink volume — under 100 drinks per day
- Space is tight — the 20lb tank is significantly smaller and easier to tuck under a counter or in a closet
- You're just starting out and want to keep upfront costs low
- You have a single fountain machine with 4-8 valves
The tradeoff is more frequent replacements. But if your supplier delivers on a regular schedule (like we do), that's a non-issue.
When a 50lb Tank Makes Sense
The 50lb tank is built for volume. Consider upgrading if:
- You're a busy convenience store or gas station pushing 200+ fountain drinks per day
- You have multiple fountain machines or a machine with 12+ valves
- You also run frozen beverage machines that use CO2
- You want fewer deliveries and less hassle — the 50lb tank needs swapping far less often
The 50lb tank costs more per swap, but the cost per pound of CO2 is lower. So if you're going through enough volume, you actually save money by going bigger.
Can You Use Both?
Absolutely. Some of our customers run a 50lb as their primary tank with a 20lb backup. When the 50lb runs out, they switch to the 20lb and call us for a delivery. Zero downtime, no flat drinks.
Others with multiple machines split it: 50lb on the high-traffic fountain unit, 20lb on the secondary machine or frozen beverage setup.
